The artist behind the paintings

The mountains are calling… always. Mountain adventure is the driving force and inspiration behind my art. Whether it is trail running, hiking, backpacking, hunting, fishing, skiing or snowshoeing, my highly realistic style originates from direct experiences. Currently a Special Education teacher, Unified Basketball Coach and Baseball Coach, I savor weekend adventures and use my time off to create meticulously detailed paintings.

I create realistic paintings of the natural world giving you the experience of being present in that moment. My detailed style of painting lends itself to accurately capturing the wild spaces our natural world offers.

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in fine art from the University of California, Davis in 1993 and have gone on to win numerous awards in the genre of wildlife art including being named the 2009 International Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year. My limited edition prints have raised over a million dollars for various conservation groups throughout North America enabling thousands of acres of habitat to be either purchased or improved.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

Inspiration

The great outdoors are my inspiration. I spend as much time as possible hiking, trail running, backpacking, camping, and mountain biking. Inspiration comes from the experiences and many sights I see during these times and when it hits, I tend get obsessive about about capturing the moment in paint.

Techniques

In short, I use both acrylics and oils by layering thin coats of paint over completed fine details in order to subtly build and bind the whole painting together.. A painting usually starts with loose brush strokes to block in the overall composition, then details are added followed by washes of thin color over the details. I repeat this process as many times as is necessary. Each painting is different as well. Sometimes I work in this fashion within smaller sections of a painting to create the realism that I seek.
