The male Costa's hummingbird is easily identified by it's brilliant purple gorget (throat feathers) that extend downward to both sides. These birds love the nectar of the desert plants. This painting focuses on subtle reflective light as well as the lighting of the gorget. I also wanted to capture the movement of the wings since it is nearly impossible to see the rapid flurry of wing beats of a hummingbird with the human eye.
